University of Lynchburg Women's Lacrosse Wraps Up Regular Reason and Prepares for ODAC Tournament
The University of Lynchburg Women’s Lacrosse team ended their regular season play against Eastern Mennonite on April 23 with a 21-8 win, and now proceeds to enter the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament where the team is currently ranked as the number 5 seed. Since 2019 with the exemption of the 2020 season being cancelled due to a rise in COVID-19, Lynchburg has earned the number four seed in the ODAC tournament, and each year were given a bye into the quarterfinals where they lost to their opponents except in 2021 and 2022 were they made it to the semifinals but no further after that.
This year, the team currently sits at number five in the ODAC, with an ODAC record of 6-4 and an overall record of 12-5. Sydney Dumas, Taylor Daugherty and Carlie Jackson are juniors on the team and are working hard to prepare for the tournament. They believe that possible first-round ODAC tournament opponents could be Bridgewater, Averett, Eastern Mennonite, and Virginia Wesleyan. Daugherty also commented that whoever their first opponent will be, having the home field advantage could be a huge boost during postseason play.
Regarding the team's attitude going into the tournament, Dumas said, “There is high energy going into the tournament. Something you don't realize until you are in the middle of it is how intense it can become. It's more than just games. We have worked all year long to grow as individuals and as a team and the tournament is our chance to show that. The past two years we have fallen during the quarter-finals, but this year we are entering with the goal of advancing further, and leaving our all out on the field”. A key aspect the team has progressively worked on throughout the season and are now keeping in mind during postseason play is the team's communication and chemistry on the field. Jackson commented that by connecting the entire team to having the defense, offense, and midfielders working together the team can play its best lacrosse and can help improve their chances of winning during the postseason.
After the regular season results, The University of Lynchburg will be matched against Ferrum for the first round of the ODAC tournament, in which over the past 5 years Lynchburg has not lost to Ferrum.
